PF ZAPU relaunch in November
23-08-08
Bulawayo-After more than twenty years since Zanu PF 'swallowed' up Joshua Nkomo's legendary party, a reformed PF ZAPU to be led by a former Minister of Home Affairs in the Robert Mugabe led government is set to be launched in November with some prominent ZANU PF heavy weights likely to support this third attempt to re-establish the party.
Dumiso Dabengwa who has since fallen out of favour with Mugabe announced the idea at the beginning of August.
The man nicknamed the black Russian for his intelligence training in Moscow was thrown out of ZANU PF for supporting former minister of finance Dr Simba Makoni's who launched his New Dawn, Mavambo or Kusile project to contest for the presidency in the March 29 elections.
PF ZAPU, which was predominantly from Matabeleland, was formed on 17 December 1961 as a resistant movement against Ian Douglas Smith's Rhodesian government.
The late Joshua Nkomo founded the party as president.
According to former police spokesperson for Bulawayo Smile Dube who is the publicity secretary of the project, PF ZAPU is set for re-launch on 22 November at a mini congress that is largely expected to elect Dumiso Dabengwa as party leader.
"We have chosen November 22 when the rainy season is starting, because that time is symbolic in the Ndebele culture. There will be a lot of beer drinking and merry making. We are even inviting Inkata freedom party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi to the event alongside other guests from South Africa," Dube said.
Dube said small Matabeleland parties like ZAPU, FDU and Liberty Party have pledged to dissolve into this reformed movement that will safeguard the interests of the people of the region.
It remains to be seen whether vice president Joseph Musika will lead his faction of former ZAPU members from Mugabe's ZANU PF into Dabengwa's party.
Musika's has been involved in bitter clashes with close allies of Mugabe, Industry and International Trade Minister Obert Mpofu, Bulawayo metropolitan governor Cain Mathema, and war veterans' leader Jabulani Sibanda.
