The new stadium to be called Zonke Izizwe Park is expected to be Zimbabwe’s biggest stadium with a proposed 80 000 bucket seating capacity.

The man behind this ambitious plan is Bulawayo born, Texas-based businessman, Ronald King who hopes to host international sporting events and musical shows when the facility is operational.

King who also has interests in the Bulawayo transport sector however would not disclose how much his company Bulkhulk Transport Holdings which is based in Austin plans to invest in the project.

The stadium will be built in the Khumalo area, east of the city centre and close to the disused hockey stadium.

The site was previously set aside for the construction of a hotel by hospitality group Cresta before the company pulled out of the project at the height of the country’s land invasions in 2000.

Zimeye can reveal that King is in partnership with an American company called TXXDSPORTS that has interests in several professional baseball and major league soccer sides in the United States.

This will see pro-baseball being introduced to Zimbabwe through exhibition matches at Zonke Izizwe Park.

The partnership could also see the proposed stadium hosting Major League soccer clubs such as Colorado Rapids and David Beckham’s LA Galaxy.

The stadium is set to be built over a period of four years.
