Speaking at a press briefing in Harare, the national chairperson of the war veterans association Jabulani Sibanda said white people have been spotted in farming areas around the country. “We are having another invasion like we witnessed in 1890. White people came with guns and massacred our people who could not defend themselves with assegais, this time around it’s a different situation, we will not sit back and watch,” Jabulani said. Jabulani did not specify if the white people refered to where farmers who were disposed of their farms during the land invasions by war veterans in the year 2000 or whites who are in the country to cover and observe the March 29 elections. The war veterans’ leader also warned the opposition party for claiming victory in the presidential elections before they are announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. “We are disturbed by statements being made by the opposition claiming victory in the presidential polls before results are released by the electoral commission. We will not sit back and count our fingers while they make such statements, we are going to take action,” Jabulani said. The war veterans’ press briefing was held at a time when President Robert Mugabe was locked in a politburo meeting suspected to have discussing possibilities of a run off depending on the outcome of the presidential results. The March 29 election presidential results are yet to be released raising fears that ZANU PF could be planning to push for a run off. The opposition MDC has since claimed a 50.3 percent majority win for the election returns received from various polling stations across the country.
