A hero’s welcome they received, a hero’s welcome they deserved, team Zimbabwe returned home from Beijing China with a thunderous welcome from people in the capital city Harare.

It was a hearty welcome for a team that was noted to be one of the best Africa teams that participated at the 2008 games.
Team icon Kirsty Coventry along with her team mates were at the back of a truck waving to a jubilant crowd that saluted the prowess of the country’s queen of the waters.

In an interview with Zimeye soon after her arrival at the Harare International airport, Kirsty said, Beijing games were a milestone for her as she managed to improve on the times that she set during the Athens games in 2004.
“I am quite thrilled that I have managed to improve my times by each race. I was getting a bit frustrated when I won the first three silver medals but I kept on telling myself, I should win a gold and eventually I got it in the last race,” Kirsty said.
Kirsty won three silver medals and one gold in women’s 100m and 200m individual medley, 100m and 200m backstroke.
Also returning home to an astounding welcome was Brian Dzingai who shocked the world by easing into the final of the 200 meters in Beijing together with the Jamaican bullet Usain Bolt who broke the world record set by Carl Lewis in 1984.
Despite missing on a medal in the final heat Dzingai was a serious contender for a medal after qualifying second in his heat behind Dutchman Churandy Martina with a time of 20.17 seconds.
Young Ngonidzashe Makusha who participated in Olympics for the first time narrowly missed on a bronze in long jump.
Anna Mguni from the Zimbabwe Olympic committee said it was an emotional welcome for the team and they deserved every bit of it.
“It is their time and they should enjoy it. It is fantastic how the people of this country have welcomed the team,” she said.
A series of events have been lined up for the team to meet the people with an appearance at the ongoing Harare Agricultural show lined up on Friday.
Zimbabwe got four medals courtesy of the swimming sensation Coventry to finish 38 on the world medal table and third in Africa behind Ethiopia and Kenya.
