Zimbabwe's Run-off Election May Be Abandoned, City Press Reports
By a Correspondent
Zimbabwe’s presidential election run- off which was scheduled for June 27 may be scrapped next week, City Press reported, citing no-one.
A five-year transitional government is to be installed be installed in Zimbabwe instead, the Johannesburg-based newspaper said. Some believe that Simba Makoni is tipped to be at the helm of this formation. Mbeki, Kaunda, and Makoni have been reported elsewhere to have hatched a plan to persuade Mugabe to abandon the election run off.
The polls follow the March 29 election won by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, but who failed to garner the more than 50 percent needed to avoid a second round. Campaigning has been marred by violence and the arbitrary arrest of opposition officials.
