Zimbabwe's main opposition party on Monday won the control of the house of
assembly, a first in the country's legislative history since independence from
Britain in 1980.
Opposition MDC-Tsvangirai
legislator for Matobo North, Lovemore Moyo was elected as the speaker of
parliament ahead of Paul Themba Nyathi from the Mutambara led faction who was
being backed by ZANU PF for the post.
Moyo polled 110 votes against Nyathi's 98 out of 208 total votes.
MDC Mutambara and ZANU PF had agreed to back one candidate but the plan did
not work as several MPs for Mutambara chose to vote for Moyo.
ZANU PF did not field a candidate but had hoped to wrestle the speakers post
through the alliance with MDC.
Earlier on, there was drama when two MDC elect members of parliament were
arrested before the swearing in ceremony.
The two Eliah Jembere and Shuah Mudiwa were arrested separately on their way
to attend the swearing in ceremony, a move that MDC says was meant for ZANU PF
to assert its dominance in the house of assembly.
In an interview Moyo said the outcome was an exciting moment for the
opposition, which has fought, for democratic reforms for a while.
Moyo said: "It gives us an opportunity to be able to exercise checks and
balances. We will be able to execute our mandate and make sure good laws are
passed. They will be challenges but we are ready to work for the betterment of
the country."
ZANU PF leader of the house Emmerson Mnangagwa said his party had not fielded
a candidate, as it was low on numbers to contest against the opposition for
the speaker's post.
He said: "The August house expressed its will as was expected the MDC had the
numbers. We of ZANU PF did not have the numbers to elect the speaker. This is
why we did not field any candidate. We let it to be fought between the two
MDCs."
ZANU PF wins control of senate
ZANU PF has retained control of the senate. Edna Madzongwe who was the
president of the senate in the previous term received 58 votes against 28
votes cast for Gibson Sibanda supported by both MDC formations.
Meanwhile, President Mugabe late on Monday appointed the remaining two
provincial governors in addition to the eight that were announced on Sunday.
The two are Titus Maluleke for Masvingo province and Max Machaya for the
Midlands.
Mugabe officially opened the 7th parliament on Tuesday.
