Nkomo is whisked out by CIO agents
By Tracy Sibanda
John Nkomo was whisked out of the Bulawayo Rainbow hotel within ten minutes of the president's speech on Friday the 20th.
At a function in which the Bulawayo business community met Robert Mugabe the president himself spoke of sell-outs within his own party who 'will be flushed out after elections' He also spoke about nationalising industries echoing the same sentiments that his information guru Sikhosana Moyo had aired three weeks earlier. Finally, the president also talked of going to war if he were to loose elections.
Many believe that the reason why Nkomo has been targeted is because of his ambitions to succeed president Robert Mugabe.
The veteran politician was quoted in May saying:
"Why would I vie for the vice-president's position when there is the presidency?" Nkomo, who is also the governing Zanu PF party's chairman, told reporters in the second-largest city of Bulawayo.
"Why should I not be president? I have risen through the ranks from branch level to the national party chairman, which is less strenuous but very powerful. So why not the presidency?"
"When the time comes that there is a vacancy, someone will occupy it. Our people are intelligent enough to make the choice."
Information on Nkomo's whereabouts was still unclear at the time of going to press. ZimEye
