High Court strikes off Biti's bail conditions

The Zimbabwe High Court has struck off bail conditions for opposition Movement for Democratic Change Tendai Biti to allow him to attend talks between his party and ZANU PF in South Africa.

His lawyer, advocate Louis Uriri of the Advocate chambers said High Court Judge granted the order to have Biti's bail conditions struck off.

"The order has been signed. The judge has granted the order to have bail conditions struck off. The bail conditions included surrendering of his passport to the clerk of court and reporting twice a week at the Harare Central Police station," Uriri said.

On Monday, the magistrate court further remanded Biti to the 26th of July.

Biti who is key in negotiations between ZANU PF and MDC can now travel to South Africa to attend talks that are bring brokered by President Thabo Mbeki to find a lasting solution to Zimbabwe's political impasse.

Despite its commitment to the talks, the MDC is yet to enter the negotiations on demands that there be an expansion of the mediating team to include a permanent representative from the African Union.

Biti is facing treason charges that could carry a death sentence or life imprisonment and malicious falsehoods detrimental to the state.

Biti was arrested on the 15th of June upon arrival at the Harare International airport returning from South Africa where he had stayed for more than six weeks soon after the March 29 house of assembly and presidential elections.

Biti has been charged for allegations of authoring a document entitled "The Transition Strategy" allegedly authored on March 25.
